An anomaly in the immune system behind the emergence of severe forms of some viral infections
After a seemingly mild viral infection, why do some patients develop severe forms? Scientists from UPEC, Inserm, the Paris Public Hospital Network (AP-HP), the Institut Pasteur and Sorbonne University have shown that the presence of a specific type of antibody disrupts the antiviral response in some patients. The study, published in the journal Cell, is part of an international collaborative initiative involving a total of 60 physicians and scientists, which has revealed the immune cells responsible for the production of anti-type 1 interferon antibodies in these patients.
