A new more reliable PCR test to detect invasive aspergillosis
Invasive aspergillosis, a severe fungal infection caused by the fungus Aspergillus, is difficult to diagnose. There is no single reliable test, and diagnostic strategies rely on a combination of factors (criteria related to the patient, clinical and radiological signs, and detection of the fungus). A trial aimed at developing a PCR genetic detection test for invasive aspergillosis infection was recently conducted on 120 patients and 223 human plasma samples and published in Clinical Microbiology and Infection. The results suggest that the test could become a reliable tool for diagnosing and monitoring patients in whom the fungus has been detected.
