Dual-use research of concern refers to research projects that, in the event of misuse or incidents, may have unacceptable consequences for human or animal health or for the environment (e.g. increased virulence or transmissibility, evasion of treatment or diagnosis, etc.). This applies to both research outputs and the related knowledge and technologies.

The Institut Pasteur has adopted a process to monitor projects involving dual-use research of concern so that the risks can be assessed (in line with the Institut Pasteur Ethics Charter), responsibility shared between scientists and the institution, and measures taken to comply with the requirements of of the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation, funding bodies and scientific journals.

The assessment process is led by a multidisciplinary committee of in-house experts, the Dual-Use Liaison Group (DULG). The committee currently has 12 members, but additional members with expertise in different fields are now needed to support these sensitive projects as effectively as possible.

A call for applications has been launched to recruit new members for a three-year renewable term. Applicants should be interested in the topic and ideally specialize in one of the following fields: 

• Bacteriology, parasitology or mycology;
• Cell biology;
• Research on toxins;
• Modeling.

Applications are open for early career scientists, senior scientists (research associates and research directors) and entity heads (units and core facilities).

Meetings are held monthly, unless there are no projects to assess. As well as the group assessment process, members can be appointed as rapporteurs for specific projects. As a member of the DULG, you will have to attend at least half of the sessions to meet the quorum.
