The safety of all staff at the Institut Pasteur is of utmost priority. To strengthen the Institut Pasteur's prevention and protection procedures in the event of a fire, the Security Department is launching a recruitment campaign to train up new volunteers.

Why this campaign?

When a fire breaks out, every minute counts. As well as the security teams, designated and trained staff members are crucial in helping with evacuation, bringing fire outbreaks under control and supporting our emergency teams. Your participation as a volunteer is essential to help protect the staff community.

In France, a fire breaks out every two minutes in apartment buildings and houses. These incidents claim more than 200 victims every year. On campus, your vigilance has meant that we have only had three fire outbreaks in five years, and they were quickly brought under control thanks to the rapid intervention of Institut Pasteur staff with extinguishers.

In-house training sessions are held to inform as many staff as possible about fire safety.

Two sessions are available to staff:

1-    Training in handling fire extinguishers and fire safety

•    Target audience: All staff

•    Length: Theory – 30 minutes Practical – 1 hour

•    Aims: Identifying hazards, using an extinguisher, knowing safety guidelines

•    Benefits: Practical information and useful everyday skills for both work and home

2-    Training in evacuation management for designated staff members (fire wardens)

•    Target audience: All staff 

•    Length: 1 hour

•    Aims: Learning procedures, managing stress and people

•    Benefits: In-house certification that recognizes your role

•    The ability to help bring a fire outbreak under control. Think about it: putting out a fire requires a glass of water in the first minute, a bucket of water in the second minute, and a ton of water in the third minute...
