  • Celebrating Spencer Shorte

Many of you came along on January 28 to the symposium organized by the Department of Cell Biology and Infection and the Department of Technology in memory of Spencer Shorte. Friends, family and scientists from all over the world gathered together in the Émile Duclaux lecture hall for an event that was full of warmth and was also deeply moving, reflecting the extraordinary legacy left by this pioneering figure in bioimaging and technology core facilities.

  • An international tribute

More than a year after his death, the international scientific community turned out at the Institut Pasteur to celebrate Spencer Shorte's legacy. The number of people who came from around the globe reflects his considerable influence, which went far beyond the Institut Pasteur campus. Researchers from far-flung countries, long-time colleagues and early-career scientists who he inspired all came along for this memorable afternoon, many reconnecting with old friends, looking back and sharing memories.

  • A scientific visionary

The successive eulogies painted a picture of an extraordinary scientist. They all pointed to his remarkable ability to anticipate future trends, his exemplary scientific rigor and his visionary approach, which shaped the landscape of modern bioimaging. Spencer Shorte did not merely follow scientific progress; he imagined it, forged it, and above all shared it.

  • Science with a human touch

Much more than his decisive scientific contributions, it was Spencer Shorte himself who people had come to celebrate. As the various guests shared their tributes, a pattern began to emerge: Spencer's remarkable generosity, his openness and ethos of sharing, his ability to convey not just knowledge but also a passion and vision. Many emphasized the way in which he embodied both scientific excellence and a deep humanity, creating an environment where science and kindness went hand in hand.

  • A legacy that lives on

The symposium was not just an opportunity to remember Spencer; it was also a celebration of a legacy that continues to inspire and influence scientific research. The contributions and discussions confirmed that his spirit, his collaborative approach and his vision for science characterized by openness and sharing are more relevant than ever.

  • Remembering together

The symposium concluded with a cocktail reception in the atrium of the François Jacob building, providing an opportunity to continue the discussions in an emotional yet uplifting atmosphere.
The relaxed, informal reception was a perfect example of Spencer Shorte's deep-held belief that science is something that must be developed together.

This unforgettable and deeply moving event will continue to serve as a wonderful reminder of the difference that a passionate, generous scientist can make to a community. Spencer Shorte's legacy will keep lighting the path of those who pursue his work, day by day.

Spencer Shorte played a key role in developing the Pasteur-Paris University (PPU) Research & Technology Doctoral Program. His vision and commitment to research will have a lasting impact on our scientific community. By dedicating this program to him, we hope that future generations of students will be inspired by his human-centered approach to science and technological innovation.
