Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
On Tuesday September 28, the Institut Pasteur commemorated the 126th anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death with a ceremony for staff. For the second time, the event could be followed online via Teams because of the health crisis.
At the ceremony, Stewart Cole, President, paid tribute to Louis Pasteur's ongoing battle "to push back the frontiers of life" and celebrated the life of this "visionary and genius," who constantly sought to "advance science for the good of humanity." It was by drawing on Louis Pasteur's values and legacy that the Institut Pasteur was able to respond to the COVID-19 crisis, an immense challenge for science in a society characterized by a deep crisis of trust, at a time when it is crucial to reach out and raise awareness among the public. Stewart Cole emphasized the importance of "keeping alive the memory of Louis Pasteur, France's favorite scientist," because it is "one of the best ways of speaking to everyone, thereby furthering the relationship between science and society." Stewart Cole announced that in 2022 the Institut Pasteur will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of its founder.
The event also served as an opportunity to pay tribute to all Pasteurians – some well known, some working behind the scenes, both scientists and administrative staff – who have played a major part in developing the Institut Pasteur's identity and enhancing its visibility over the years.
