Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
Following the 2021 sustainable development challenge that ran from May 17 to June 23, in which staff were invited to submit posters containing ideas, suggestions or projects related to sustainable development on the Institut Pasteur campus, feasibility studies are now being carried out for the winning projects, and the following initiatives have already been launched:
"Coffee for the boss!" by Philippe Casanova in the "Consumption habits" category
Before considering a possible rollout of this project, a bean-to-cup coffee machine will be available on a demonstration basis on campus from November 22 to 26, 2021, during the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR). The machine will be presented from 12.30 to 2.30pm in a different spot on campus every day (in compliance with hygiene and distancing measures):
November 22: hall of the Fernbach building (building 68)
November 23: hall of the Metchnikoff building (building 67)
November 24: hall of the Duclaux building (building 01A)
November 25: hall of the François Jacob building (building 26)
November 26: hall of the CIS building (building 15)
The aim is to estimate the running costs and to show that the coffee preparation time, machine maintenance and waste reduction are compatible with the needs of Institut Pasteur staff for this type of equipment.
"Reducing the carbon footprint of restaurants on campus" by Nell Saunders in the "Working life" category
Since 2014, the organic waste produced by the restaurants on campus and left by Institut Pasteur staff on their plates (< 6 tons/year) has been dehydrated on campus and then used to make compost. Institut Pasteur staff who want to contribute even further to recycling efforts can take their cloth napkin to the canteen and their coffee cup to the cafeteria. The introduction of reusable takeaway boxes is also under consideration. Posters are now displayed near the checkouts in the canteen and cafeteria to remind staff that they can help generate less waste by choosing not to print out their receipt.
All the posters submitted to the 2021 sustainable development challenge can be consulted here.
The Sustainable Development Department would like to run this challenge again in 2022, so you can already start discussing ideas and thinking about what to put on your poster for next year. If you have any questions, please contact challengeDD2022@pasteur.fr.
