Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
The online courses division is offering you the opportunity to register for the second edition of the Human Population and Evolutionary Genetics MOOC, led by Lluis Quintana-Murci and Etienne Patin, which will run from December 6, 2021 to February 14, 2022.
Almost 20 years after the human genome was sequenced, vast reams of genomic data have enabled scientists to describe human genetic diversity in an unprecedented level of detail and have improved our understanding of the demographics of our species, especially how human populations spread across the globe, how their sizes have changed over time, and the extent to which they have admixed.
The aim of this MOOC is to provide a solid introduction to population genetics as applied to our species and to illustrate this with multiple examples from research. The various factors that determine our genetic diversity, including mutation, recombination, genetic drift and natural selection will be described.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• describe what population genetics is,
• explain the factors that are responsible for genetic diversity,
• describe the genetic history of our species over every continent,
• identify how humans have adapted to remarkably diverse environments,
• discuss the importance of the Neanderthal genome in our genetic heritage.
This MOOC is one of the 15 MOOCs selected for the Institut Pasteur's digital diploma in infectious diseases (DNM2IP), which was launched in 2019 and already has more than 530 learners registered on every continent.
