BICENTENARY

Official launch of the Louis Pasteur stamp issued by La Poste

As announced in the December 10 issue of the newsletter, the French postal service La Poste has decided to mark the bicentenary of Louis Pasteur's birth this year by issuing a stamp and souvenir set bearing the scientist's portrait. Designed by Patrick Dérible on the basis of a photo proposed by the Pasteur Museum and engraved by Pierre Bara, the stamp and souvenir set officially went on sale this week, and several events were held in honor of the occasion.

Sale of the stamp in Dole, in the Jura region, ahead of its general release

The stamp went on sale on February 4, 5 and 6, in advance of its general release, in Dole, the town where Louis Pasteur was born, in the Jura region of France. Pierre Bara, the engraver of the Louis Pasteur stamp – who was himself born in Jura – was in attendance at the event over the weekend to sign the stamps. A total of 705,000 copies of the special stamp have been issued.

Presentation ceremony for the stamp in Paris

Following on from the event in Dole, a presentation ceremony for the stamp was held on Thursday February 10 in Paris, in "Le Carré d'Encre", the only shop in France dedicated to stamp collecting and correspondence.

At the event, Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur, and Philippe Wahl, CEO of the La Poste group – who were in attendance alongside Gilles Livchitz, Director of Philaposte, Maxime Schwartz, former President of the Institut Pasteur, and Jean-François Chambon, Vice-President Communications – Scientific Outreach at the Institut Pasteur, as well as a handful of journalists and stamp collectors –, made an official presentation of the stamp, which was followed by speeches, a photo session and press interviews.
