Synthetic genome: five new synthetic yeast chromosomes

Three years after publishing the structure of the first synthetic yeast chromosome, the Sc2.0 international consortium, made up of over 200 researchers from all over the world, has announced that it has synthesized five new chromosomes, making up 30% of the microorganism’s genome. These findings were the subject of seven joint papers, published in the March 10, 2017 issue of the Science journal. In one of these papers, researchers from the Institut Pasteur, the CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) and Pierre et Marie Curie University studied the functional organization of these synthetic chromosomes. Their research can be used to confirm the overall design of the synthetic sequences and will serve as a reference for future experiments.
