Full Drive Encryption: New workstations are now more secure

As part of its security plan and as per recommendation of the French government, the new workstations distributed by Institut Pasteur’s IT support will feature Full Drive Encryption.

Why deploy such a tool?

This measure improves the security of the data stored on your computer in a mobile and remote work context. It allows you to prevent unwanted access by malicious actors to the data contained in your computer in the event of loss or theft of the equipment.

Which devices are concerned?

All new laptop distributed by the IT support will be fully encrypted, according to the best method, starting from the 2022 deployment:
•    Bitlocker Full Drive Encryption for Windows
•    FileVault for Mac

The devices already in service are not affected. This security measure will be rolled-out gradually as the Pasteurian’s equipment is being replaced.

What changes for me?

Everything is completely transparent for all Pasteurians. There are no extra passwords to remember, and no actions to take. The device automatically decrypts the data when you turn it on thanks to a cryptographic chip built into the device called a TPM.

Users do not usually experience slowdowns on encrypted workstations, except sometimes during the initial set-up. In addition, new computers purchased on the market are increasingly encrypted by default, so you may already be using encrypted devices without even knowing it!

What if something goes wrong?

In the event of a malfunction, IT support has recovery methods to bypass the encryption. This means that even in the case of a malfunction, and even remotely, the helpdesk can give you access to your computer and its data.
