BICENTENARY

The CeRIS celebrates Louis Pasteur's bicentenary

To mark the bicentenary of Louis Pasteur's birth, the CeRIS is pleased to present a series of online resources that pay tribute to the scientist.

•    PaJ@Mo, the Institut Pasteur's digital heritage

The Institut Pasteur's digital library,  which aims to make the Institut Pasteur's rich heritage available free of charge online by presenting the scientific writings of the Institut Pasteur scientists who forged its history, offers online access to the following:

-    the complete writings of Louis Pasteur : more than a thousand digitized texts, mostly scientific articles but also reports, speeches, addresses delivered to the French Academy of Sciences and Medicine, and forewords,
-    a collection of documents about Louis Pasteur comprising digitized documents (letters, etc.) from the Pasteur Museum, the Institut Pasteur library, various archives and national and international digital libraries. This collection of works and archives is not exhaustive; it will be expanded throughout the year and may be supplemented by your own finds in the heritage collections of other digital libraries.

•    Picture library

The Institut Pasteur picture library contains several thousand images and includes a collection about Louis Pasteur featuring more than 800 historical images, most of which are kept in the Pasteur Museum.

These include portraits of the man and his family, cartoons – many of which were published in the press to report his discoveries during his lifetime –, together with Louis Pasteur's own artworks produced during his youth.

The collection also contains many images illustrating Louis Pasteur's scientific activities: crystallography and molecular asymmetry, research on fermentations and refutation of the spontaneous generation theory, pasteurization, and research on attenuating microbial virulence which led to the rabies vaccine.

•   Selection of videos available online

Throughout the year, the library will also search for videos about Louis Pasteur or the Institut Pasteur. This series  began with a nod to the official launch of the Louis Pasteur stamp issued by La Poste :

Pasteur, un savant aux multiples facettes (Pasteur, a multifaceted scientist) is an outstanding original documentary that presents the chemistry research performed by our institute's founder as seen through the many postage stamps issued in tribute to him throughout the world – making him one of the most popular stamp subjects of all time.
