Publication of the 97th issue of the LIP

The latest issue of the quarterly newsletter for Institut Pasteur donors - the "Lettre de l'Institut Pasteur" (LIP) - contains a special feature on infection-related cancers.

More than one in every six cases of cancer worldwide is currently of infectious origin (caused by viruses, bacteria or parasites). A total of 2.2 million new cancer cases every year are the result of infection by a pathogenic agent. Eight viruses, one bacterium and three parasites have been classified as group 1 carcinogens (known to be carcinogenic to humans) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization.
This is the case for the hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses, some papillomaviruses and the AIDS virus. The Helicobacter pylori bacterium is also a group 1 carcinogen.
