Awareness campaign about digital responsibility

On January 9, an awareness campaign was launched by ADEME, the CNRS and Inria on the environmental impact of digital technologies. ADEME will broadcast TV spots to raise awareness and will launch a new platform called "Alt Impact" to provide guidance on the impact of digital technologies and the best practices to follow.

This is an opportunity to raise the issue of digital responsibility at the Institut Pasteur.

 

Why is digital responsibility important?

Because in France, digital pollution represents :

- 4.4% of greenhouse gas emissions, or as much as the waste sector!

- 11% of national electricity consumption

- 60% of environmental impact comes from the manufacture of our devices

- 800 million appliances, or more than 10 per person on average!

If nothing is done, the impact of digital technology could triple by 2050, while France aims to divide its greenhouse gas emissions by four (source: altimpact.fr).

Can we do anything at the Institut Pasteur?

The Institut Pasteur can improve its performance in terms of digital responsibility. And we all have a role to play!

1.    Understanding is the first step to taking action!

Sign up for a Climate Fresk® workshop to learn about the challenges of the climate emergency for yourself, link to the upcoming Climate Fresk workshops on campus.
 
2.    Find out about digital responsibility, raise the subject with those around you and take individual and/or collective action – every little help.

For ideas about how to get started, see the new "digital responsibility" page (in French) developed by the CSR/RSE department. The page contains information and resources to introduce you to the topic of digital responsibility. The page will be regularly updated with news so make sure you check it out on a regular basis.
