Replacement of outgoing members of the Institut Pasteur IRB: call for expressions of interest

The Institut Pasteur Institutional Review Board (IRB), set up in 2009, is an ethics committee accredited by the US Department of Health and Human Services. It is composed of 9 to 15 members, with an internal panel (Institut Pasteur members) and an external panel (non-Institut Pasteur members), and is responsible for evaluating research protocols involving human subjects from an ethical viewpoint. Its meetings are held in French. This year, some outgoing members of the IRB's internal panel will be replaced by new members.

The IRB's mission is to make sure that the rights and well-being of research participants are protected. It may be approached to carry out an ethical review of a research project in three specific scenarios:

  • if the project is funded by a US public agency (e.g. the NIH),

  • if the Institut Pasteur is the legal representative for research carried out abroad,

  • if the project leader requires an ethical opinion from his or her institution in response to a request from a funding body or publisher, or in the absence of another ethics committee with legal authority.

Are you interested in ethical issues? Do you enjoy taking part in committee-based discussions? Do you have experience in clinical research? Are you an active proponent of a responsible scientific approach that respects human rights? Then you could become one of the future members of the Institut Pasteur IRB.

Five new members will be appointed for a three-year term, renewable once:

  • 2 full members with scientific and/or medical training (technicians, engineers, scientists or physicians),

  • 2 alternate members with scientific and/or medical training (technicians, engineers, scientists or physicians),

  • 1 alternate member with a legal background and significant experience in the field of research.

If you are interested in joining the IRB, please send a detailed CV and a letter of intent explaining your reasons for wanting to join to the address irb@pasteur.fr, with the subject heading "candidature IRB" ("IRB application"), by midnight on Wednesday May 9, 2018.

For eligible applicants, the selection process will involve an interview with an IRB subcommittee composed of IRB staff and some current members (in May). Successful applicants will be notified in June and will take up their position in September.

Please contact Fanny Momboisse or Virginie Pirard if you require any further information.
