Academia Europaea was set up in 1988 in Cambridge as a European non-governmental association for the promotion of education and research. It currently has nearly 4,000 expert members from fields as varied as social and cognitive sciences, medicine, economics, law, letters and humanities, mathematics and physics.
In September 2018, two Institut Pasteur scientists were elected as new members of Academia Europaea in recognition of their achievements and their respective contributions to European research: Laure Bally-Cuif, Head of the Zebrafish Neurogenetics Unit, and David Prangishvili from the Molecular Biology of Gene in Extremophiles Unit.
