Disposing of non-chlorinated waste water

In view of the Institut Pasteur's location in central Paris and the nature of its work, it has an obligation not to discharge effluent into the drainage system. Effluent discharge is strictly prohibited by regulations.

A specific waste stream – "UN3082 non-chlorinated waste water" – was introduced in August 2017 for waste water with no particular risk other than for the environment.

The UN3082 stream is for solutions that are not flammable, toxic or corrosive (acid or base) and do not contain halogenated compounds such as fluorine, bromine, iodine or chlorine at concentrations above 2%. Running buffers, saline solutions and generally any non-hazardous solutions with a pH between 5 and 9 (i.e. which are not covered by the specific acid or base streams), such as TAE, Tris and KCl solutions, should be disposed of in the UN3082 stream.

In 2018, the quantities recovered by the collection team in the Cleanliness, Waste and Sterilization Unit within the Quality, Environment and Sustainable Development Department came to 4,585 metric tons, divided into 559 containers.
This volume is likely to go up further in 2019 as the teams on campus get used to the new waste disposal guidelines.

Teams have several ways of determining the appropriate waste stream for their chemical products:

  • the PasteurChem application, available in "Mon Portail de Services" (My Service Portal) > Connaître et gérer mes produits chimiques (dangers, manipulation, stockage, déchets, ...) (Understand and manage my chemicals (risks, handling, storage, waste, etc.)), helps you identify the correct waste stream, either directly via the "Déchets" (Waste) tab in the application, or via a downloadable analysis of your Safety Data Sheet,

  • a poster on chemical waste disposal (FR and EN) is available to download on Webcampus,

  • the email address hsqe@pasteur.fr can be used for any questions about how to dispose of complex products or those not listed in PasteurChem.

If you need any waste disposal containers, please send a request to dechets@pasteur.fr.
