A look back at the "Origins of microbiology" event

On March 18, a video conference seminar was held between the University of Pavia (Italy) and the Institut Pasteur on the theme "Origins of microbiology".

The participation of several University of Pavia alumni, including a certain number of Pasteurians, enabled us to devise a partnership project between the two institutions with the aim of:

  • promoting Louis Pasteur in the University of Pavia's future museum trail dedicated to Lazzaro Spallanzani given that Louis Pasteur regarded Lazzaro Spallanzani* as one of the pioneers of microbiology,

  • encouraging exchanges for scientists between the two institutions which already actively collaborate on scientific projects (ERC consolidator grant).

The University of Pavia has plans to set up a "Spallanzani Museum" and the university alumni have asked the Institut Pasteur to trace the history of Lazzaro Spallanzani's portrait which was placed in Louis Pasteur's dining room at his request.

*This great Italian biologist studied the spontaneous generation theory and was among its detractors a century before Louis Pasteur refuted the theory permanently.

In order to support scientific collaboration between the two institutions, the Department of Education and University of Pavia's Chancellor’s office are working to set up student mobility programs between the two institutions.
