Cholera: scientists trace the origins of outbreaks in Europe since 1970

Making use of the collection of V. cholerae strains held by the National Reference Center for Vibrios and Cholera (hosted by the Institut Pasteur's Enteric Bacterial Pathogens Unit) and working in collaboration with scientists from the Cantacuzino Institute in Bucharest, Romania, and the Public Health Agency of Canada, a retrospective analysis of the most recent cholera outbreaks in Europe, in relation with the seventh pandemic that is currently ongoing, was carried out by studying the genomes of 172 strains isolated from European patients.
