Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
In line with the Institut Pasteur’s efforts to promote mental health, the MAASCC and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) group propose to open up discussions around mental health in academia and exchange on how to address mental health in research practices.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the global mental health crisis [1], young researchers might be particularly at risk of mental distress. The hypercompetitiveness of the academic world combined with the unpredictability of scientific research can be particularly strenuous. Here at the Institut Pasteur, a recent survey on the mental health of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows revealed that half of them declared having a worsened sleep schedule since the beginning of their contract [2].
In this next Diversity in Science Café – a collaboration between the MAASCC and the DEI group – you are invited to join this meeting for a presentation by Zoe Ayres and a follow-up discussion on “Academic Mental Health: Towards Improving Research Culture” on April 26, 2023, at 2pm, in the Jules Bordet lecture hall and via Teams.
Zoe Ayres, researcher in chemistry, is a mental health advocate in academia and the author of the best-selling book "Managing Your Mental Health During Your PhD." She is also strongly involved in promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in academia. On her website, you can find plenty of resources on mental health in academia and you can access her book for free thanks to the CERIS [3].
Here's hoping to see lots of you there and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Mental Health resources provided by the Institut Pasteur [4].
