Company set-up

Upcoming "Start-up breakfast" session on May 4

The next Start-up breakfast will be held on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at 8:30 am via Teams with Dr Nathalie Brandenberg as guest.

Nathalie is a talented young bioengineer and co-founder of SUN bioscience SA, a start-up in the field of stem cell research.

Nathalie studied Bioengineering at EPFL and had the opportunity to do her master's project at Tokyo University. She then spent another year as a research assistant at Tokyo University before doing her Ph.D. in Switzerland in Matthias Lutof's lab of EPFL. During her PhD, she worked in stem cell research. With a colleague, Sylke Hoehnel,PhD student in the same lab, Nathalie has developed a new technique that simplifies stem cell culture in vitro. This innovative technique of fast and massive stem cells culture  and differentiation can be used to assess drug efficacy and regenerative medicine.

As soon as it became clear that there was potential in this method, Nathalie and Sylke, created their own company: SUN bioscience SA in 2016.

EPFL Lausanne helped these two young scientists for their promising technique and awarded them a one-year Innovation Fellowship which helped them secure substantial seed funding as well as coaching. They got supported USD 100,000 as start-up capital and got coached to bring their technology to market by Founder.org (http://founder.org/), the accelerator for universities’ innovation helped them to bring their technology to market.

Nathalie and Sylke believe that their new techniques of stem cells culture in vitro have a great future in medicine, and they definitely want to be part of this revolution.

If you want to learn and share how they pull their research project into a business concept and their journey from the research lab to a startup, please come and discuss her experience.
