  • François Xavier Weill, winner of the 2018 Eloi Collery Prize from the French National Academy of Medicine

The French National Academy of Medicine awards a number of prizes every year. Some prizes are related to specific fields according to donors' wishes, while others are designed to reward or encourage research in the medical, pharmaceutical or veterinary sciences but with no particular set theme.

The prizes are often named after the benefactors who bequeathed the assets required for their creation to the Academy. Prize winners are awarded the title of Laureate of the French National Academy of Medicine.

One of the laureates selected by the French National Academy of Medicine on July 4 was François-Xavier Weill, Head of the Enteric Bacterial Pathogens Unit and Director of the French National Reference Center (CNR) for E. coli, Shigella and Salmonella and the WHO Collaborating Center (WHOCC) for Reference and Research on Salmonella. He was awarded the Academy's highest honor, the Eloi Collery Prize.

The prize recognized a "Better understanding of the emergence, genetic evolution and circulatory pathways of enteric bacterial pathogens, in particular those with epidemic potential and/or multidrug resistance to antibiotics".
