Regulatory update on eliminating hazardous waste – part 3: New instructions for chemical waste management

The instructions for dealing with chemical waste are changing to incorporate new regulatory requirements that apply to the Institut Pasteur's activities. The chemical waste management system now includes packaging that is empty, dirty and has not been cleaned, and non-chlorinated waste water.

For packaging that is empty, dirty and has not been cleaned:

  • the guidelines for separating plastic and glass packaging still apply;

  • packaging that has contained oxidizing substances must now be disposed of in special containers;

  • packaging that has contained substances that are hazardous for road transport, identified by ADR certified packaging belonging to group I, must be disposed of in special containers.

For non-chlorinated waste water:

  • containers with blue labels marked UN3082 will be available;

  • non-hazardous chemicals or chemicals which only pose a risk to the environment should also be disposed of via this new waste system.

We would remind you that a memo from the Quality, Environment and Sustainable Development Department outlines the responsibilities of waste producers and provides some guidelines on how to dispose of liquids.

A specific memo will be circulated to the Health & Safety Coordinators for each unit on how to implement these new guidelines. A3 posters outlining the new procedures will soon be available at the entrance to the company restaurant.
