Survey on the mental health of early career scientists: results, conclusions and launch of a new survey

Recognizing the importance of mental health among its community of early career scientists, the Institut Pasteur implemented an assessment and prevention initiative in 2022.

An anonymous and confidential internal questionnaire was conducted to evaluate perceived stress levels and their impact on the health and daily routines of postdoctoral fellows and PhD students.

Results and conclusions

Following the survey, a steering committee analyzed the results and proposed a number of improvements that will boost existing health measures via a collective prevention strategy.

A long-term initiative

A further survey on the mental health of early career scientists at the Institut Pasteur will therefore be conducted in 2023, from March 15 to 29 by the Occupational Health and Prevention Department.

From next week, all postdoctoral fellows and PhD students at the Institut Pasteur will be invited to complete the 2023 edition of the questionnaire to evaluate their perceived stress and the impact on their health.

In practice:

• The questionnaire is anonymous and confidential and processed in compliance with medical confidentiality principles
•  The questionnaire will take you less than 10 minutes
•  The personal link sent to all postdoctoral fellows and PhD students can only be used once
•  The sender is the Institut Pasteur Occupational Health Department <sante-jeune-chercheur@sst.pasteur.fr>

The questionnaire revealed that the early career scientist community is not sufficiently aware of some of the existing support mechanisms. Messages will be sent out more regularly in the coming weeks and months, providing an opportunity to improve the visibility of available measures.
