In 2022, hearing loss affected nearly 1.5 billion people worldwide. WHO predictions suggest that by 2050 that figure will have grown to 2.5 billion. The only treatment option currently available for profound hearing loss is cochlear implants, electrical stimulators that restore some hearing in certain patients but whose limited performance affects patients' quality of life.
The collaborative HearLight project, coordinated by the Hearing Institute and established with the help of the Europe division in the Grants Office (goeurope@pasteur.fr), is aiming to develop a new technology to improve the precision of auditory rehabilitation. It combines bioelectronic and optogenetic techniques to apply precise stimulation patterns within the auditory cortex, a region that is crucial for auditory perception.
A few months ago, teams from the educational media platform "L'Esprit Sorcier" came to film and interview staff involved in the project to produce an explanatory video for its YouTube channel.
In May 2021, a dedicated website was also launched for the HearLight project, providing information for the public and patient associations about the aims and challenges of the project and the latest progress
