Why do we respond differently to infections or vaccines? Why are some people allergic to pollen? These are still unanswered questions in biological and medical science. The Milieu Intérieur Laboratory of Excellence coordinated at the Institut Pasteur by CNRS research director, Lluis Quintana-Murci, has recently described immune variation on a large scale within the French population.

On February 15, the Collège de France hosted the prize-giving ceremony for the Fondation de France medical awards, which recognize research in a wide variety of fields including neuroscience, rare diseases and oncology. For each laureate, this prize represents a significant financial boost while also demonstrating the appreciation of the scientific community for the quality of their research.

The next lecture, entitled "Crisis in biomedical science: time for reform?", will be held by Arturo Casadevall, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, USA.

The 2018 edition of the workshop on the latest technological developments in fluorescence microscopy will be held on the Paris campus (March 12-16, 2018).

Research

The Institut Carnot Pasteur Microbes and Health  (Pasteur Microbes et Santé, Pasteur MS), alongside the Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office (STTE-DARRI), is launching a call for proposals to support entrepreneurship toward start-up creation.

Agenda

The 20th edition of Brain Awareness Week will be held from March 12 to 18, 2018. To mark this initiative, for the fifth year running, the Institut Pasteur will be holding a lecture and debate for the general public on the topic of the "social brain". This event will take place on the Paris campus on March 17, 2018, from 2 to 5pm in the CIS.

Training

The HR training center in the Talent and Organization Development Department is running a number of courses in 2018 and 2019. These are mainly aimed at those who specifically requested them under the training plan, with any remaining spaces being offered to other Institut Pasteur staff members. OREX staff may also attend these courses, but the costs of the surgery certification must be paid by their supervisory authority or research entity.
