2017 Fondation de France medical awards: four Institut Pasteur scientists recognized

On February 15, the Collège de France hosted the prize-giving ceremony for the Fondation de France medical awards, which recognize research in a wide variety of fields including neuroscience, rare diseases and oncology. For each laureate, this prize represents a significant financial boost while also demonstrating the appreciation of the scientific community for the quality of their research.

Every year, the Fondation de France and several other foundations under its aegis award these medical prizes in recognition of the work achieved by research teams and also as a means of encouraging promising young researchers.

The 2017 winners included four Institut Pasteur scientists:

  • Camille Danne, who completed her PhD in the group led by Shaynoor Dramsi within the Biology of Gram-Positive Pathogens Unit, and Pedro Escoll, a post-doctoral fellow in the Biology of Intracellular Bacteria Unit, shared the Jacques Monod Prize, which goes to scientists who have carried out research in French laboratories on the molecular aspects of cell regulation.

  • Simon Cauchemez, Head of the Mathematical Modeling of Infectious Diseases Unit, won the Thérèse Lebrasseur Prize, which recognizes the research of an Institut Pasteur scientist that did not involve vivisection.

  • Jean-Paul Latgé, a Professor at the Institut Pasteur, was awarded the Georges Zermati Prize, which goes to an Institut Pasteur scientist in any discipline.
