2024 list of 100 top inventors in the magazine Le Point, 2024 John Kendrew Young Scientist Award

  • Marie Flamand in the 2024 top 100 inventors list published by the magazine Le Point

For the third year in a row, the news magazine Le Point has published a list of top inventors for 2024. With the help of a panel of experts, the idea was to select 100 people who have developed an innovation with the potential to change the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals. The prizes were presented at the Paris-Saclay Summit on March 1, an event that showcased men and women who are using science and basic research to change the world in a variety of fields including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, aerospace engineering, robotics, neuroscience, energy and medicine.

The inventors on this third annual list include Marie Flamand from the Structural Virology Unit, whose research impressed Le Point's expert panel. Marie Flamand and her team have developed an early identification test for dengue based on the detection of a specific viral marker in patients' blood. The test could improve the prognosis of this viral infection transmitted to humans by mosquito bite.

  • Thibaut Brunet, winner of the 2024 John Kendrew Young Scientist Award

The John Kendrew Young Scientist Award (JKA) was launched in 2007 as an initiative from the EMBL Pensioners' Association to support scientists in the early stages of their career. It recognizes excellence in science and/or science communication. It is open to all pre- and postdoctoral scholars two to seven years after leaving EMBL.

Thibaut Brunet has received the 2024 John Kendrew Young Scientist Award in recognition of his groundbreaking discoveries in the field of evolution of development. His creative and original research has reshaped our understanding of how fundamental morphogenetic mechanisms govern the generation of shape and form in animals during evolution.
