Bulletin interne de l'Institut Pasteur
The conference to launch the disability action plan among the Institut Pasteur community took place in the CIS on Thursday November 16, ahead of European Disability Employment Week* (which will run from November 20 to 26, 2023).
The event, led by Thomas Bourgeron, was an opportunity to reaffirm the Institut Pasteur's commitment to greater inclusion for disabled people and to raise awareness about disability issues.
Raise awareness
The theme of the event – an invitation to "change the way we think about disability" to encourage us to work better together – was highlighted in a variety of performances and presentations:
· The Institut Pasteur choir accompanied the La Pasteurale French Sign Language group for a musical interlude with signing.
· Sandrine Daniel, Head of the HR Legal Affairs Department and Head of the Disability Office, and François Romaneix, Senior Executive Vice-President, explained the importance of improving inclusion on campus and the main stereotypes related to disability.
· There was also a scientific focus with a discussion and exchange of views between Paul Avan, Director of CeRIAH, and Thomas Bourgeron, Head of the Human Genetics and Cognitive Functions Unit.
Engage and act
In other highlights, Sandrine Daniel spoke about the disability review carried out in collaboration with Agefiph and presented the results of the internal survey and the action plan developed on the basis of the survey findings. The Disability Office, which has been established to develop, implement and spearhead the disability policy in cooperation with the HR/Occupational Health and Prevention liaison staff, was also presented to attendees.
Another aim was to inspire engagement and action through personal accounts, with Christelle Riche, Head of Disability and Inclusion at Inserm, sharing her experience, and a testimony from retired engineer Marielle Bréas.
Finally, a discussion involving the various speakers as well as Stéf Bonnot-Briey (co-founder and co-president of the organizations Handi-Voice, PAARI and the AUTOP-H Federation and Vice-President France for Autism-Europe) provided an opportunity to emphasize the importance of creating a favorable climate to be able to talk about disability.
Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur, concluded this first staff event about disability by calling on the Institut Pasteur community to step up and proactively engage with the disability policy.

To make the event as inclusive as possible, it was interpreted into French Sign Language in real time in the CIS. However, the video stream does not show the sign language interpretation in full.

* For the past 27 years, European Disability Employment Week (EDEW) has been an opportunity to raise awareness about disability and to emphasize the importance of inclusion and equal opportunities in the workplace. It is also a good time to review the various mechanisms introduced to facilitate disability inclusion at work, to discuss and share views and to learn and raise awareness about employment for disabled people
