Exhibition in tribute to Pasteurian Jules Bordet organized by the Université libre de Bruxelles
From October 9 to December 21, 2019, the Université libre de Bruxelles, in cooperation with the Institut Pasteur, will pay tribute to the Pasteurian Jules Bordet who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1919 for his work on immunity, with an exhibition entitled "Les 100 ans d’un Nobel Jules Bordet, un pasteurien à l’ULB, Voyage au cœur de l’immunité" (100 years of a Nobel Jules Bordet, a Pasteurian at ULB, Journey to the heart of immunity).
The exhibition traces the career and discoveries of this great immunology researcher through historical documents, scientific objects, works of art, films and photographs.
His fundamental discoveries in the fight against infectious diseases are explained in a clear and comprehensive way. The exhibition celebrates the legacy of Jules Bordet's work and his many developments in the fields of serodiagnostics, vaccination and serotherapy, particularly for the treatment of cancer or organ transplant rejection.
The exhibition leverages Jules Bordet's research to showcase what drives experimental research: curiosity, rigor, imagination, performance of tools and sometimes sheer luck. It also evokes scientific diplomacy in the early 20th century and modern-day society's debates on screening and prevention of communicable disease.
Throughout the exhibition, works from bio artists provoke thought and debate about current uses of biotechnologies.
This exhibition reaches out to a wide and diverse audience. Through the exceptional career of Jules Bordet, it illustrates and questions the impact of science on health and society both past and present. A number of objects and documents were loaned from the Pasteur Museum and archives which collaborated on its design.
On another note, as announced in the July 19 newsletter, the Institut Pasteur will pay tribute to Jules Bordet on March 13, 2020 with a symposium dedicated to the 100-year anniversary of his Nobel Prize. The event will take place on the Paris campus.
