Fighting violence against doctoral students: results of a survey by the Observatory of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in Higher Education
The Observatory on Gender-Based and Sexual Violence in Higher Education presents the main findings of its latest public report,‘Pressure, silence and resistance’.This presentation will report on the survey conducted by the Observatory at the national level among more than 2,000 doctoral students and young doctors in June 2024. As the first survey of this scale conducted on the subject of sexual violence and discrimination experienced by doctoral students in France, it has revealed the prevalence of such violence during doctoral studies and the shortcomings in how it is dealt with by the academic institutions and communities. Supported by figures and verbatims, the study highlights some specificities of the doctoral context, such as the multiplicity of places and times where violent acts can occur, or the frequent occurrence of such violence in hierarchical and educational relationships. The testimonies collected throughout the survey unveil a climate of significant and pervasive pressure, confining victims and witnesses to silence.
