Regulations on flying drones over the Institut Pasteur campus

Have you recently bought a drone and want to film yourself or take some aerial shots of campus? It might seem like a nice idea, but there are some rules in place that the Security Department would like to share with you.

In areas where restrictions apply – including the Institut Pasteur, which is considered a sensitive site –, flying drones is:

  • either entirely prohibited,
  • or subject to specific permission from the Security Department and the manager of the airspace.

Risks

Drones today represent much more than an innovative technological tool. If used maliciously, they can pose a considerable risk for companies working in sensitive fields and on strategic sites like the Institut Pasteur. Once a hypothetical threat, flying drones illegally and using them for espionage, transporting dangerous goods and acts of terrorism has now become a reality.

Given the possibility of drones being used as a new means of attack, staff need to be on their guard and take precautions to protect people, infrastructure and data. By anticipating risks we can strengthen security at the Institut Pasteur. The location, field of activity and international exposure of the Institut Pasteur are all factors that may encourage acts of sabotage.

Security guidelines

  • Precautions to prevent risks associated with the use of drones

Make sure that no sensitive documents are visible from outside (plans, drafts of unpublished documents, roadmaps, etc.) and tilt screens to reduce visibility from outside (use screen filters if available).

  • Reporting

If you see a drone hovering or on the ground and there has been no official notification via the various in-house communication channels (staff emails, the newsletter or ePasteur), report the suspicious situation immediately to a security officer by calling the Security Operations Center on 70 00 and providing as much detail as possible (place, date and time, length and direction of flight, description of the unmanned aerial vehicle – size, color, whether it was holding any objects, etc.).

We are all responsible for the security and safety of the Institut Pasteur. By acting with caution on a daily basis you can help keep our campus safe. The security team would like to thank you for your help and understanding.
