The CeRIS cinema club is pleased to invite you to a screening of the documentary Isaac Asimov, l'étrange testament du père des robots in connection with its involvement in the event Recombinations – science, fiction, society.
The film will be shown on Friday May 24, 2024 at 1.30pm in the auditorium of the François Jacob building.
This gripping documentary presents a profile of the American writer and scientist Isaac Asimov (1920-1992), considered as the godfather of science fiction, and explores the social role of science and the value of science fiction as a place to explore the bounds of possibility.
"I don't see my books as prophecies but as possible scenarios for the history of humanity," he explains.
Director Mathias Théry set himself the ambitious task of creating a posthumous masterclass taught by Isaac Asimov, primarily based on his many public statements and interviews. The author left behind a visionary body of work, having anticipated many of the technological developments of our time.
Should we fear our own disappearance? Can we change the course of history? How can we avoid an environmental catastrophe?
While most science fiction narratives envisage catastrophic scenarios, Asimov preferred to respond to anxiety through creativity and freedom, to build an imaginary world where technology plays a key role and where our future depends on what we do with our knowledge. He was convinced that scientists of the future would play a key role in society and that this would give them huge responsibilities. Sharing knowledge with the public is the first of these responsibilities.
Director: Mathias Théry, 2022. Length: 54 min. The film is in French.
