The French National Academy of Medicine is a learned society composed of physicians, surgeons, biologists, pharmacists and veterinarians recognized for their scientific research and their positions of responsibility in the field of health. Eleven national members have been Nobel Prize laureates since the Academy was established.
The Academy's independence and the relevance of its reports and publications mean that it is uniquely positioned and has an important role to play in the field of health. French authorities can ask it for an opinion, or it can choose to publish an opinion in the field of health, generally on questions related to public health and medical ethics.
The French National Academy of Medicine currently has:
• 135 permanent members
• 160 corresponding members
• 60 foreign associate members
• 120 foreign corresponding members
On January 7, Hervé Bourhy, a virologist and professor at the Institut Pasteur, was elected as a new member of the National Academy of Medicine.
