The iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) program, originally set up by MIT in Boston, was launched for the first time at the Institut Pasteur this year.

This program invites Bachelor and Master students to complete a project based on an advanced scientific topic, taking into account its societal and ethical aspects.

This year's Pasteur iGEM team includes students from several universities (UPMC, Sciences Po, ASSAS and ESPCI).

They are working on a project to turn plastic waste into medicines via the heterologous expression of enzymes.

The program is supported by several internal and external sponsors, including (for the Institut Pasteur) the Department of Development, the Research Applications and Industrial Relations Department (DARRI)/Carnot, CiTech and the senior management.

The students are mostly supervised by volunteers from the Institut Pasteur, including PhD students, and by external participants.

A new dedicated website for the iGEM program can now be found in the Teaching section of the Institut Pasteur website.
