A look back at the New Year ceremony on January 9, 2019

On Wednesday January 9, all staff were invited to the traditional New Year ceremony to hear from Christian Vigouroux, Chairman of the Institut Pasteur Board of Directors, and Stewart Cole, President of the Institut Pasteur.

This event, which many of you attended, was an opportunity to look back on the achievements and milestones that marked 2018, especially in the area of governance but also in terms of the many scientific publications produced by the Institut Pasteur's scientists (an impressive 1,100 in 2018) and the main honors and awards received. The speeches reflected on a year in which the Institut Pasteur celebrated its 130th anniversary, with many highlights including the inauguration of the Nanoimaging building and the OMICS Center, as well as the high-level conference on world health, attended by many influential figures, which took place on November 13.

The New Year ceremony also provided a chance to focus on the new strategic plan, which was approved on December 21 by the Board of Directors.

For the Board of Directors and its Chairman, the focus and commitment of the Institut Pasteur over the coming years will be based on three main areas: scientific ambition and excellence, an effective business model, and biological safety policies that are vital for the Institut Pasteur's credibility and global reputation, enabling it to maintain the trust of donors and partners.

The ambition of the new plan is to push back the frontiers of knowledge and to provide a tangible response to three public health challenges:

  • emerging infectious diseases,

  • antimicrobial resistance,

  • conditions associated with brain connectivity and neurodegenerative diseases.

This scientific ambition will involve four cross-cutting priorities:

  • To strengthen the Institut Pasteur International Network and implement a proactive policy of international partnerships

  • To promote creativity and openness to society

  • To work more effectively together and empower each individual so as to create an attractive, collaborative working environment

  • To develop financial resources to strengthen the Institut Pasteur and ensure its long-term sustainability

2019 will see the implementation of the various measures identified to achieve the priorities in the strategic plan, all of which reflect one major ambition: "to give new impetus to basic research and increase the impact of this research on health challenges".

The event was followed by an enjoyable drinks reception which provided an opportunity for further discussion.
