Institut Pasteur is delighted to announce that Professor Pierre-Marie Girard has been appointed, at President proposal, as Vice-President International Affairs at the Institut Pasteur – by a decision of the Institut Pasteur Board of Directors on Friday April 19, 2019.
Professor Pierre-Marie Girard is a practicing doctor and Head of the Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Department at Saint-Antoine Hospital (part of the Paris Public Hospital Network, or AP-HP), and a Professor in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine at Sorbonne University Faculty of Medicine. He is also Chairman of the Supervisory Board at the Institut de Médecine et d'Epidémiologie Appliquée (IMEA) – Fondation Internationale Léon Mba, and former President of ANRS Coordinated Action 12 – Research in countries with limited resources.
Pierre-Marie Girard has an M.D. from Pierre & Marie Curie University (Paris 6) with a specialization in internal medicine and infectious and tropical diseases, and also a PhD in Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology from Paris Diderot University (Paris 7).
His main research focus is clinical research on the treatment and prophylaxis of opportunistic infections associated with HIV in both developed and developing countries. He has coordinated or been involved in several clinical trials on antiretroviral therapy since the early 1990s, contributing to the drug review process and to the development of antiretroviral strategies linked with national and international multicenter trials. Pierre-Marie Girard has authored more than 350 international publications.
In a highly competitive context in which the Institut Pasteur is keen to strengthen its links with institutes in the Institut Pasteur International Network and implement an active policy of national and international partnerships, Pierre-Marie Girard's international expertise will be a major asset in optimizing the work of the International Network to improve human health worldwide.
Pierre-Marie Girard takes over from Marc Jouan, who was appointed as President of the Institut Pasteur de Nouvelle-Calédonie in January 2019.
Pierre-Marie Girard will take up his role on May 2. He will become a member of the Executive Board and the Senior Management Board and will report directly to President.
Sincere thanks to Jennifer Heurley, who served as acting Vice-President International Affairs and will now be responsible for key policy and diplomacy aspects of the Institut Pasteur International Network in her role as Assistant Vice-President.
