appointment

On March 23, the Institut Pasteur announced that Lluis Quintana-Murci had been appointed as Chief Scientific Officer. This new post has been created in connection with the implementation of the general strategic plan adopted by the Institut Pasteur management. Lluis Quintana-Murci, a member of the Executive Board, will serve as a person of reference and coordinator for the Institut Pasteur's scientific teams.

Decision

Following the favorable opinion issued by the Scientific Council in June 2015, the Malaria: Parasites and Hosts Unit was set up on March 3, 2016.

Conference

On April 25 and 26, the Institut Pasteur is organizing the "International Zika Summit - Bringing Together Science and Public Health" on its Paris campus. In partnership with the Wellcome Trust, the French REACTing Group (Inserm, IRD), WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, this event will be attended by scientists and healthcare professionals involved in the fight against an epidemic which represents "a public health emergency of international concern", as stated in February by WHO.

Under the auspices of the Guinean Ministry of Health, a workshop was held, from 8th to 11th March 2016, in Conakry on the conditions for creating a national biobank, following the Ebola outbreak.

Research

Following on from the success of previous calls for proposals, and with the aim of developing their cooperation and strengthening their synergies, the Carnot Institute for Animal Health (ICSA) and the Pasteur Infectious Diseases (PMI) Carnot Institute are launching their third consecutive joint call for proposals in 2016 in the fields of (i) infectious diseases mediated by viruses, bacteria, parasites or prions, and (ii) dysbiosis of the gut microbiota (intestinal, respiratory, vaginal or cutaneous) and its impact on health (infectious and non-infectious diseases, inflammatory and metabolic diseases, etc.).

Education

The 3rd annual Graduation Ceremony in honor of PhD students who defended their thesis in 2015 took place on Friday, December 11th, 2015.

The Genopole building and the building previously used for interns will soon be undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for the future OMICS Center.

Pasteur and his disciples, including Roux, Yersin, Calmette and many others, developed vaccines and serums that were used to combat infections and ultimately to fight deadly epidemics of plague, diphtheria and typhus. But what we didn't know, and what Annick Perrot and Maxime Schwartz reveal in this book, is that all these discoveries also saved lives during the First World War.
